Overview
Rafting here runs the Zambezi's grade 5 rapids through the dramatic basalt walls of the Batoka Gorge, starting just below the Falls. It's genuinely demanding — this isn't a lazy float trip — but professionally guided, with safety kayakers on the water throughout. Only runs in low-water season, since the rapids are unrunnable at full flood.
What to expect
Safety briefing
A thorough briefing and practice session before putting in, covering paddling commands and what to do if you're thrown from the raft.
On the water
A mix of serious rapids and calmer stretches to catch your breath, with the gorge walls towering above you the whole way.
The climb out
Full-day trips end with a genuinely steep climb out of the gorge — a real factor in your fitness planning for the day.
Good to know
- Seasonal — runs roughly August through December when water levels allow; check current conditions when booking
- Half-day trips avoid the steepest sections and the full climb out, a good option if fitness is a concern
- Wear secure water shoes or sandals — flip-flops won't survive the day
- Not recommended if you have back or neck issues — ask the operator if unsure
