The short answer

There's no single "best" month — it depends on what you want. If you want the most dramatic, powerful Falls, go March to May. If you want clear photos, warm light and the chance to swim at Devil's Pool, go September to November. If you're combining your trip with a safari, June to September gives you the best game viewing in nearby parks like Hwange.

Quick pick
First-time visitor with no strong preference? Aim for late August to October. Water levels are still impressive, skies are clear, mist is manageable for photos, and it's also the sweet spot for rafting and Devil's Pool.

Victoria Falls by season

High water season — February to May

This is when the Falls are at their most powerful. Fed by rains upstream in Angola and Zambia, the Zambezi peaks around March–April, sending up a spray cloud that can be seen (and felt) for kilometres — locally this mist is why the Falls are called Mosi-oa-Tunya, "the smoke that thunders." April in particular can push flow rates to roughly 500 million litres per minute.

The trade-off: the spray can be so heavy that parts of the walking trail are drenched and viewpoints are obscured by mist rather than water. Bring a rain jacket even on a sunny day, and don't expect crisp, wide photos of the whole Falls face during peak flood.

Shoulder season — June to August

Water levels start dropping, mist clears, and views open up. This period overlaps with Zimbabwe's dry winter, which is also prime time for game viewing in Hwange, Chobe and Zambezi National Park, since animals concentrate around remaining waterholes. Days are warm and dry; nights and early mornings can be genuinely cold (single digits °C), so pack layers if you're on a dawn safari drive.

Low water season — September to December

By September the river has dropped enough for Devil's Pool to open (typically mid-September through December) — a natural rock pool right on the lip of the Falls where you can swim up to the edge. Visibility is at its best, the golden late-afternoon light is popular with photographers, and this is also the best window for white-water rafting, since the rapids aren't runnable at full flood. The downside: in a low-rainfall year, by October–November some sections of the Zimbabwean side can slow to a comparative trickle, especially near the Zambian border side of the gorge.

Rains return — December to February

Short, heavy afternoon thunderstorms are typical, with humidity rising and the river beginning to refill. It's a quieter, greener, less crowded time to visit, with greenery returning to the bush — good for travelers who want lower prices and don't mind a shower most afternoons.

Frequently asked questions

Is there ever a "bad" time to visit?

Not really — even at its lowest (typically November, in a dry year), the Falls remain one of the most impressive natural sights in the world, and low water opens up experiences like Devil's Pool that simply aren't possible the rest of the year.

When is Devil's Pool open?

Roughly mid-September through December, water-level dependent. It's accessed from Livingstone Island on the Zambian side and needs to be booked as a guided tour in advance.

Can I combine the Falls with a safari?

Yes — June through September is the classic pairing, giving you strong water flow at the Falls plus dry-season game viewing at Hwange National Park (about 1.5 hours from Victoria Falls) or Chobe National Park in Botswana, just across the border.
