The KAZA UNIVISA
Most visitors cross borders here using the KAZA UNIVISA — a single USD 50 visa valid for up to 30 days that covers both Zimbabwe and Zambia, and also permits day trips into Botswana via the Kazungula border. It's available on arrival at Victoria Falls Airport, Livingstone's Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport, the Victoria Falls land border, and Kazungula, or in advance as an e-visa. Your passport needs at least 6 months' validity from your date of entry.
Crossing into Zambia
The crossing is via the historic Victoria Falls Bridge border post, about a 15–20 minute drive/walk from Victoria Falls town. With a KAZA UNIVISA already in hand, this is a straightforward passport-stamp process at immigration on both sides. It's a common day-trip crossing for visitors wanting to see the Zambian-side views, visit Livingstone Island, or access Devil's Pool (September–December). See our Zimbabwe vs Zambia comparison guide for what's different about each side.
Crossing into Botswana
The Kazungula border crossing, about 1.5 hours from Victoria Falls, connects to Botswana's Chobe National Park — a popular day-trip combining a game drive and a river cruise. This crossing is covered by the KAZA UNIVISA for day trips. Kazungula also has a bridge connecting to Zambia, part of the same border complex, making it a useful hub if you're combining all three countries in one trip.
Practical tips
- Carry your passport at all border crossings, even on a short day trip — you'll pass through immigration checkpoints both ways regardless of visa status.
- Border posts can be slow at peak times (mid-morning, weekends) — build in buffer time, especially before a flight.
- Use a licensed transport operator for cross-border trips — they know current permit requirements and border procedures, which change from time to time.
- Keep some USD cash for any incidental border fees, though most costs are covered by the KAZA UNIVISA itself.
