The bottom line

Zimbabwe's official currency is the ZiG (Zimbabwe Gold), introduced in 2024. In practice, the US Dollar remains the de facto currency for tourism โ€” safari lodges, national park entry fees, activity operators and most restaurants in Victoria Falls quote and accept prices in USD. Bring US dollars in cash as your primary currency and you'll have no meaningful difficulty here.

What to bring
Small denomination USD notes (ones, fives, tens) are genuinely useful for tips, curio markets, and small vendors who may struggle to make change on larger bills.

Cards & ATMs

Larger hotels, lodges, restaurants and supermarkets (OK, PicknPay, and similar) accept card payments and often swipe in USD directly. Smaller operators and market vendors are cash-only. ATM access and reliability can be inconsistent โ€” don't rely on being able to withdraw cash on arrival; bring what you need in USD cash from home.

Tipping norms

Tipping is customary and appreciated across the tourism industry here โ€” guides, drivers, and lodge staff. As a general guide: a few dollars per activity for guides, and a daily amount for lodge staff if you're on an all-inclusive stay (ask your lodge for their suggested guideline, as it varies by property).

Practical tips

  • You may receive ZiG in change at some local shops โ€” it's usable locally but not useful once you leave, so spend it before departure or simply expect it as small change.
  • Foreign exchange bureaux operate in Victoria Falls town if you want to convert a small amount to ZiG for local purchases, though it's rarely necessary for a typical visit.
  • Book activities and transport in USD upfront where possible โ€” most tour operators quote and confirm in USD.
